Let’s Walk More! Simple Steps to Boost Wellness at Work and Beyond

Our Working on Wellness (WOW) Team recently launched an internal newsletter to encourage the entire team at Healthy Acadia to explore opportunities to boost their health and wellness every day. When I suggested that we share these tips and resources with our wider community - all of you - they were all for it!

With the start of Summer (yes, it’s finally here!), June’s theme is about WALKING, so LET’S GET MOVING!

Whether it’s a stroll around the block or a walking meeting with a colleague, every step counts. Incorporating more walking into your day can be one of the easiest and most effective ways to boost your physical and mental health. Your body and brain will thank you!

In our fast-paced, screen-filled days, it’s easy to forget how powerful something as simple as walking can be. Whether you’re at your desk, in meetings, commuting, or rushing from one thing to the next, walking offers a much-needed chance to reset—not just your body, but your mind too.

Just 30 minutes a day can make a big difference. Regular walking has been shown to:

  • Improve cardiovascular health

  • Boost mood and reduce anxiety

  • Sharpen memory and focus

  • Increase energy levels

Think of walking as a mini reset button—free, easy, and surprisingly effective.

Make It Easy to Move: Everyday Ways to Walk More

You don’t have to overhaul your schedule to start reaping the benefits. Here are a few simple ways to sneak more steps into your day:

  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator

  • Park a bit farther from your destination

  • Walk during phone calls or lunch breaks

  • Set a timer to stand up and walk every hour

  • Start or join a walking group with coworkers or neighbors

Try a Walking Meeting

Need to connect with a coworker? Skip the conference room and take it outside. Walking meetings are great for one-on-one check-ins and brainstorming sessions. They:

  • Spark creative thinking

  • Break up screen time

  • Encourage more open, relaxed conversation

So grab a coworker, a friend, a family member, or the neighbor’s dog, lace up your shoes, and let’s walk more—one step at a time toward better health, stronger connections, and a more energized day.
