Supporting Breastfeeding Families
National Breastfeeding Month is an annual celebration observed in August, aimed at raising awareness about the importance and benefits of breastfeeding for both mothers and babies. The theme for World Breastfeeding Week 2023 - August 1 - 7 - set by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) is, “Enabling breastfeeding: making a difference for working parents.”
With the ever-increasing research and understanding about the numerous advantages of breastfeeding, we have seen a positive shift in societal attitudes towards this natural and nurturing act. National Breastfeeding Month serves as a platform to educate and empower individuals and communities to support breastfeeding mothers and create an enabling environment that promotes breastfeeding as the norm. Together, we can ensure that every mother and baby has the support and resources they need to embark on this beautiful and vital journey of breastfeeding.
Breastfeeding is beneficial for both mothers and infants, offering a wide range of health advantages. For babies, it provides the essential nutrients needed for growth and development while bolstering their immune system to protect against infections and diseases. Breast milk is easily digested, reducing the likelihood of gastrointestinal issues and allergies. Breastfeeding also promotes bonding between mother and child, aiding in the development of emotional and social skills.
For mothers, breastfeeding aids in postpartum recovery by promoting uterine contraction and reducing the risk of postpartum bleeding. It also helps to lower the chances of developing breast, ovarian, and uterine cancers, as well as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Breastfeeding supports healthy postpartum weight loss and helps lower stress levels.
Breastfeeding is a natural and beneficial choice that provides multiple long-term health benefits for both mother and child. Let's work together to support every mom, baby, and family on their breastfeeding journey.
