Calling All Schools: Apply Now for Maine's Local Foods for Schools Funding!

The Maine Department of Education is currently offering a fantastic opportunity for schools to enhance their nutrition programs and support local farmers. If you haven't heard about it yet, listen up! The Local Foods for Schools funding is up for grabs, but the August 18, 2023, deadline for applying is quickly approaching.

What is the Local Foods for Schools funding, you ask? Well, it's a program designed to promote healthy eating habits among students while also boosting the local agricultural industry. The way it works is simple yet powerful – for every $3 that a school administrative unit spends on purchasing produce, value-added dairy, protein, and/or minimally processed foods directly from local farmers, farmers' cooperatives, food hubs, processors, or distributors within the State, this fund will match $1. Last year, in 2022, the cap per administrative district was set at $5,000, giving schools the opportunity to make significant strides in providing fresh, locally-sourced foods to their students.
