Maine Recovery Core
What is Maine Recovery Core?
Maine Recovery Core is a paid internship program that trains and supports recovery coaches across northern and eastern Maine. It is one of Healthy Acadia’s many impactful initiatives aimed at improving community health and wellness.
Maine Recovery Core evolved from Healthy Acadia’s unique three-year AmeriCorps/ Maine RecoveryCorps program launched in 2018. Recovery coaching positions that began as national service positions have been reimagined as paid internships. This new structure continues to be coordinated by Healthy Acadia and focuses on offering recovery support services in communities throughout Maine. Maine Recovery Core Internships offer a unique opportunity to build professional skills while supporting individuals and families impacted by substance use disorder.
The internship is open to individuals 18 years of age and older with a high school diploma or equivalent, who are ready to make a difference in the lives of others.
What Do Recovery Core Interns Do?
Interns in the Maine Recovery Core program are trained as recovery coaches—a critical peer role that provides direct support to people in recovery or those affected by someone else's substance use. Interns are embedded in community-based organizations such as healthcare centers, law enforcement agencies, correctional facilities, and nonprofit groups across ten of Maine’s sixteen counties.
Intern responsibilities include:
Providing peer support and encouragement for individuals seeking or maintaining recovery.
Supporting affected others—family and friends of individuals with substance use disorders.
Connecting people with local resources and services that can support their recovery.
Engaging in community outreach and public education about recovery and available services.
Helping to build recovery-ready communities by strengthening awareness and access to support.
What You’ll Gain
The Maine Recovery Core Internship is more than a job—it’s a path to professional and personal growth. Interns receive:
Training and certification as a recovery coach.
Professional mentoring and support from experienced public health professionals.
Skill building in communication, leadership, and resource navigation.
Workplace immersion in public health and behavioral health settings.
A strong network of peer support and collaboration with other interns and host site staff.
Whether you are starting your career or exploring a new direction, this internship provides valuable experience and a powerful opportunity to support recovery and resilience in your community.
