Downeast Cancer Patient Navigation Program

According to the Maine 2016 Annual Report of Cancer, Washington County has the highest rate of cancer mortality of any Maine county. Since 2017, Healthy Acadia and Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center have partnered to offer the Downeast Cancer Patient Navigation Program in Washington County, Maine. 

Through this program, we provide patient-centered cancer care and resource navigation and coordinate cancer prevention education and early detection services in communities throughout Washington County. Our cancer patient navigator works one-on-one with patients who are facing a cancer diagnosis, helping them to navigate the healthcare and social service systems and community resources to access appropriate diagnostic, treatment, recovery, support, and financial services. Patient navigation services are confidential, respectful, compassionate, mindful of patient safety, and offered at no cost to patients.

Cancer patient navigators bring extensive experience in navigating complex healthcare management systems and can guide cancer patients, their family member(s) and/or caregiver through every step of the cancer journey and help to make the cancer treatment process easier and more manageable. 

Working directly with both patients and healthcare providers, patient navigators offer a compassionate and dependable system of support to help facilitate timely access to quality healthcare, empowering patients to be in control of their healthcare and other aspects of their lives, thereby improving patient outcomes and reducing mortality. 

Cancer patient navigators facilitate communications between patients and health providers, and can answer questions about what to expect throughout care, coordinate appointments and treatments, provide appointment reminders, arrange care between healthcare providers, provide emotional support, offer tobacco cessation classes and counseling, and more.

The Downeast Cancer Patient Navigation Program is supported by a grant from Maine Cancer Foundation. Maine Cancer Foundation’s grant is offered as part of their ongoing efforts to reduce cancer incidence and mortality in Maine.
